EU Referendum Voting, Broken Down by Party

The constituency of the person who began the no confidence vote, Dame Margaret Hodge, was one of only five boroughs in London to vote to leave the European Union — and by 62 percent. In Corbyn’s Islington more people turned out than during the general election and 76 percent voted to remain.

Those resigning from the shadow cabinet have no better records — Gloria de Piero’s Ashfield, for instance, voted for Leave by almost 40 points. Chris Bryant’s Rhondda, Lilian Greenwood’s Nottingham, Lisa Nandy’s Wigan, Karl Turner’s Hull, and Vernon Coaker’s Gedling followed suit.
If these MPs were such excellent campaigners and better understood the mood of the electorate, why couldn’t they deliver their own constituencies? www.jacobinmag.com

Do You Believe the Media?

Michael Crick, C4
Adam Boulten, Sky News
We posted an indy news video of the 'Keep Corbyn' demo yesterday because mainstream media was sparse, edited and partial.

Michael Crick of Channel 4 News said the number of demonstrators who turned up (with under 24 hours notice) was "1,000 to 1,500 maybe".

Adam Boulten of Sky News reported  "more like 300".

The official police estimate was 10,000 (Police estimates have got more reliable over the years - they couldn't get worse could they).

These things are easy to check, there is plenty of video.

Unfortunately the Channel 4 video of the crowd stopped panning just beyond the half way point, eliminating nearly 50% of the protesters.

Even easier though is some simple maths:

  • The grass area of the square is a little over 50m by 50m
  • 50x50 = 2,500 square metres.
  • The square was full, and packed.
  • About 4 people comfortably fit within 1 square metre, without bumping into each other.
  • 4 x 2,500 = 10,000 people.

The future is uncertain. We face a Tory Brexit, Cameron has resigned and we are likely to have a general election in the coming months with the potential of Britain lurching yet further to the right.

A small number of Labour MPs are using this as an opportunity to oust Jeremy, disrespect the Labour membership who elected him and disregard our movement for a new kind of politics.

We cannot let this undemocratic behaviour succeed.

Join us at 6pm outside Parliament tomorrow, Monday 27th June.

The Parliamentary Labour Party will be meeting inside, so let's make sure they can hear us, the Labour Party members and voters, outside.

#KeepCorbyn. Let's build our movement.

Urgent: Momentum Calls Anti Coup Protest

If the Blairite coup succeeds, the large number of overpaid unrepresentative Labour MPs will drag the party further from its grass roots, opening up the field for UKIP amongst traditional working class constituencies.  UKIP's target now, after Brexit, is working class votes.

You know what that leads to....

Labour MPs Totally Out of Touch....

Meanwhile two of the 218 labour MPs, Dame Margaret Hodge and Lady Margaret Ann Coffey, have the cheek to submit a motion of no confidence in Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn!

Corbyns letter to Labour party members:

Dear member,
After yesterday's European referendum, politicians of all parties must listen to and respect the vote. Millions of voters have rejected a political establishment that has left them behind. Communities that have been hardest hit by government cuts and economic failure have voted against the status quo.

The first task is to come together and heal the divisions. Our country is divided and things need to change. Politicians on all sides must respect the decision of the British people.

Ours is the only party that can meet the challenge we now face. Labour is best placed to re-unite the country. We can do so because we didn't engage in project fear, and because we share people's dissatisfaction with the status quo. That was why we put a case for both remain and reform.

I will be making clear to both Remain and Leave voters that Labour will fight for the exit negotiations to be accountable to an open, transparent parliamentary process. And we'll do everything to secure the best deal for the people of Britain at every stage.

We cannot leave it to the Conservative Party - who have shown time and time again that they can't be trusted to stand up for working people.

The Prime Minister has resigned and the Tories are deeply divided at a time when the country needs to come together and we need stability to head off economic crisis.

I want to thank all our campaigners, from Alan Johnson - who chaired Labour's campaign - to our whole Shadow Cabinet, and to members in constituencies across the whole country, for their tireless campaigning and commitment to social justice.

Labour was created to serve people in their communities and workplaces. We need to put that historic purpose into action now and campaign to protect and represent the people we serve.

Yours sincerely

Jeremy Corbyn
Leader of the Labour Party
